The short-handed 7th grade girls' basketball team claimed the City of Light Championship on Thursday, March 8 over a physical Jewel squad. The 7th grade cagers trailed for most of the Championship Game and took a 1-point lead at the end of the first half. The third quarter found the tired squad down by as much as 6 points only to narrow the gap at the start of the fourth, where both Jewel and the Crusaders of St. Rita traded the lead. With 34 seconds left and down by 1, St. Rita center Ceniz Rubio snatched an offensive rebound and scored a put-back to regain the lead by 1. With 10 seconds remainding, Point Guard, Isabel Orozco stole a Jewel inbound pass and streaked for a fastbeak layup, to give the Crusaders a 3 point lead, which resulted in the final score of 27-24. Jewel had a final 3-point attempt that was off the mark.
St. Rita has only won the 7th Grade City of Lights twice before in 2008 and 2006.
The Crusader team consists of: Katie McDonnell, Ceniz Rubio, Briana Linden, Isabel Orozco, Iliana Vega, Gaby Vargas and Faith Aayla. They are coached by Brian Linden.
